Caleb Downs Clinches Freshman Award

12/27/2023

TLDR: Caleb Downs, the defensive stalwart for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has been named the 2023 Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year, an honor recognizing his standout performance throughout the season. A native of Hoschton, Georgia, Downs is now the second player in Alabama’s history to receive this prestigious award, following in the cleat-steps of Will Anderson Jr., who won in 2020. With a season boasting 95 tackles—placing him fourth in the SEC—two tackles for loss, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, two interceptions, and impressive special teams contributions, including an 87-yard touchdown return, Downs has proven to be a formidable force on the field. His dominant play earned him multiple accolades, including SEC Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, and twice being named SEC Freshman of the Week. Downs’ selection from a group of exceptional finalists highlights not only his individual talent but also Alabama’s storied tradition of nurturing young football standouts.

Let me tell y’all somethin’ ‘bout this young fella named Caleb Downs. This kid, straight outta Hoschton, Georgia, has gone an’ done something pretty darn special. He’s been crowned the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year for 2023, and let me tell ya, it’s a well-deserved honor for this Alabama safety.

Now, Caleb ain’t just any ol’ player. He’s leadin’ the Crimson Tide with a tackle count so high it’d make a preacher cuss—95 stops, to be exact, which puts him right up there in the big leagues of the SEC. And it ain’t just about quantity, ya hear? Quality is the name of the game with this one. Two big ol’ tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and swoopin’ up a loose ball like it’s a hot biscuit on Sunday mornin’. And don’t even get me started on his interception game—you’d think the pigskin’s got a thing for him the way it finds his hands.

But wait, there’s more! The lad can move with the ball too; tack on 87 yards and a touchdown to his name on just four returns. Y’see, special teams ain’t so “special” without folks like Downs makin’ plays.

Now, I reckon what makes this even sweeter is he’s followin’ in the footsteps of another ‘Bama legend, Will Anderson Jr., grabbin’ this same award back in 2020. It’s like ‘Bama’s churnin’ out these young stars faster than a hound after a rabbit.

Throughout the season, Caleb’s been rakin’ in the awards like leaves in the fall—SEC Newcomer, Freshman of the Year, and not once, but twice, he’s been called SEC Freshman of the Week. If that don’t tell you this kid’s the real deal, then I don’t know what will.

So, let’s tip our hats to Caleb Downs. He stood shoulder to shoulder with some high-caliber youngsters like Rueben Bain, Kevin Concepcion, Noah Fifita, and Dillon Thieneman. But in the end, our boy from Alabama clinched it, showin’ that Crimson Tide ain’t just about the offense, it’s got a defense that can scare the daylights outta any team it faces.
