John Emery Jr. Stays Home with LSU

TLDR: John Emery Jr., a former five-star recruit, has made the decision to return to LSU for a sixth year, as announced on Instagram. Previously entering the transfer portal, Emery retracted after an unstable offseason for LSU’s running backs. His return provides much-needed depth after last year’s leading rusher Logan Diggs transferred to Ole Miss and other members left the team. Despite facing academic and injury challenges, Emery’s record as a promising and versatile player stands out, particularly from his 2022 season with 375 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Although LSU was a top-performer in rushing last year, Emery’s return comes at a crucial time as Trey Holly’s status remains uncertain. Teaming up with Kaleb Jackson, Josh Williams, and new talent Caden Durham, Emery aims to contribute to LSU’s offensive success, supported by a solid returning offensive line.

In an unexpected turn of events, John Emery Jr. declared through an Instagram post last Friday that he’ll remain with the LSU Tigers for his sixth year. This announcement surprised fans, given his recent decision to enter the transfer portal after the previous season wrapped up. His post, adorned with the caption “I’m staying home. Committed!”, marked a turn of tides for LSU’s already beleaguered running back squad.

Emery’s decision to return plays a crucial role for the LSU Tigers, who have faced significant attrition within their running back ranks. To underline this depth issue, last season’s starting RB Logan Diggs opted to transfer to Ole Miss, with other backups choosing new paths as well. Compounding this situation, sophomore Trey Holly’s future remains clouded following legal troubles earlier this year. Emery’s return injects some much-needed experience and stability back into the team.

Since his arrival at LSU as a highly-touted five-star recruit, Emery has been under the microscope with immense expectations. Yet, his journey at LSU has been fraught with challenges, having missed the entire 2021 season due to academic troubles. More recently, Emery’s contributions were curbed during the 2023 season, first due to the rise of Logan Diggs and later owing to a significant injury in November.

Emery’s best performance occurred in the 2022 season, achieving 375 rushing yards and securing six touchdowns. He also demonstrated his capability as a receiving threat, adding 129 yards and two touchdowns in the air. When he’s at his best, Emery possesses the skill set to be a versatile and explosive backfield presence.

With Emery planning his comeback, he’ll be reintegrated into a backfield alongside returning sophomore Kaleb Jackson, veteran Josh Williams, now in his sixth year, and freshman recruit Caden Durham. The Tigers once boasted a top-tier running game, finishing tenth in rushing yards and first in yards per carry last season. Although repeating this feat may be challenging, a largely unaltered offensive line promises solid ground support, providing numerous opportunities for Emery and his teammates to shine.
