TLDR: LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, making his first start in Tiger Stadium, led the No. 18 Tigers to a 44-21 victory over Nicholls with an impressive six-touchdown performance. Despite struggling to pull away from the Nicholls Colonels in the first half, LSU found their stride in the third quarter. Nussmeier connected twice with receiver Kyren Lacy, adding to his night’s tally. While LSU’s passing game dazzled, the team’s ground game remained a concern, managing just 64 yards rushing. Nicholls’ senior running back, Collin Guggenheim, stood out with 145 yards and two touchdowns, including a remarkable 67-yard run. This game marked a significant milestone as the 100th season of Tiger Stadium, “Death Valley,” with Nussmeier’s performance echoing legendary past moments. LSU looks to build on this win as they travel to South Carolina, while Nicholls heads west to Sacramento State.
Well folks, it was quite the night down in ol’ Baton Rouge as we saw Garrett Nussmeier put on a show in the Tigers’ 44-21 victory over the Nicholls Colonels. Can ya believe it? The fella threw six touchdown passes, making it his personal debut at our much-beloved Tiger Stadium. Everyone was a bit on edge after that darn opening loss to USC, but Nussmeier gave us plenty of reasons to cheer. Watching that ball zip from his hands to the end zone reminded me why I fell in love with this here game.
Now, it didn’t start as the runaway some might have hoped for. It was neck and neck, with LSU leaking oil up until the third quarter when they finally decided to hit the gas. Nussmeier led a mighty fine 11-play drive, covering 72 yards, and hit Kyren Lacy for a solid touchdown. Ain’t nothin’ like a well-oiled offense comin’ together. Then, on the next defensive series, we got a gem from freshman P.J. Woodland who forced and picked up a fumble, squashing any momentum Nicholls was tryin’ to build.
That darn Nussmeier kept the heat on, connecting with Lacy again for his third score of the evening. By that point, they left no doubt who was boss. Nussmeier’s performance? It matched that of last year’s Heisman winner Jayden Daniels, with six touchdowns in a single game. Shoots, I reckon that boy is getting’ whispers of greatness, though he’s got a bit to go before he touches the likes of Joe Burrow’s single-game record of seven TD passes.
While the air assault was firing on all cylinders, the running game still fumbled to get traction, finishing with just 64 yards on the ground. That’s something ol’ Coach Brian Kelly wants to get sorted, you can bet your boots on that. “The players are good enough. We got to coach better. That is on me,” he said. And I couldn’t agree more, though I’m sure they’ll iron out those kinks before SEC play hits full swing in South Carolina.
This was a historic night, marking the 100th year of football in “Death Valley.” Tiger Stadium saw its 452nd win, and with each passing play, I couldn’t help but reminisce ‘bout all the glory our stadium’s seen. The lights, the renovations, all them fans—it’s a football man’s dream come true. As we look ahead to tackle the Gamecocks in South Carolina while Nicholls heads off to Sacramento, we’ve got plenty to be proud of and much to look forward to. Go Tigers!
