Michigan's NFL Draft Prospects

TLDR: Michigan Wolverines’ football team is poised for a standout NFL draft presence in 2024, with key players like J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, and others declaring for the professional level. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy is a significant standout with an impressive college record and a promising draft projection. Running back Blake Corum, after a historic season, also declared, alongside key defensive and offensive players including Braiden McGregor, Kris Jenkins, and others. These declarations underline Michigan’s potential to break previous records for draft picks and showcase the depth and talent of the current team. With several players set to enter the draft, including additional declarations like Junior Colson and Josh Wallace, Michigan’s representation in the upcoming NFL draft promises to be noteworthy.

The University of Michigan is on track to make a significant impact at the 2024 NFL draft. Head coach Jim Harbaugh set the expectations high, suggesting his team may set a new record in the number of selections. Leading the declaration is quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who announced his decision to enter the draft last Sunday. With his impressive college record, McCarthy is projected to be a first-round pick, praised by several major sports outlets for his potential in this year’s draft class.

McCarthy has been a cornerstone for the Wolverines, boasting a stellar 27-1 record, the best winning percentage among Division I quarterbacks with a minimum of 20 starts since 1970. His leadership and skill earned him the title of Big Ten Quarterback of the Year in 2023, complemented by a memorable performance in the 2024 Rose Bowl game. His declaration for the NFL draft has been seen as a pivotal moment, reflecting his readiness to take on the professional challenge heaped upon him.

Blake Corum joined McCarthy on January 14, marking the end of his illustrious journey with Michigan. Known for keeping his word, Corum returned to help the Wolverines secure a national championship. Over the season, he set records, including scoring 27 touchdowns and establishing a new career rushing touchdown record at Michigan. Recognized as a unanimous All-American, Corum’s legacy in Michigan is cemented by his consistent scoring across all 15 games.

Braiden McGregor, another promising player, declared his NFL aspirations after Michigan’s championship celebrations. Despite less flashy numbers, McGregor’s contributions on the field were crucial, earning him a share of the defensive player of the week recognition six times. With 26 tackles, including nine for loss and 4.5 sacks, he finishes his college career as an All Big Ten honorable mention.

Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins took his next career step by announcing his draft entry, backed by a strong season performance that projected him among the top 50 selections. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors with a tally of 37 tackles, proving instrumental in fortifying Michigan’s defensive line. Jenkins, known for his enthusiasm award, captures the spirit of Michigan’s fight on the field.

Zak Zinter, a key figure on Michigan’s formidable offensive line, will be heading to the draft, despite suffering an injury late in the season. A two-time Joe Moore Award winner and unanimous All-American, Zinter’s resilience shines as he prepares for an NFL future. His 45 game appearances highlight his durability and skill as a crucial component of Michigan’s O-line dominance.

Roman Wilson, with unmatched chemistry with McCarthy, is another departure set to make waves. Known for his consistent performance, Wilson managed 789 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, including a clutch performance in the Rose Bowl against Alabama. His aptitude for turning plays into significant gains has been a vital asset for Michigan, ensuring his skills will be a sought-after commodity in the upcoming draft.

Michigan hopes to see more players emerge in the draft, with names like Junior Colson, Josh Wallace, and others increasing the roster of talented athletes transitioning to the professional stage. Junior Colson, in particular, made headlines with his declaration. As the Wolverines’ top tackler this season, Colson’s choice underscores the depth and talent Michigan continues to offer to the NFL.
