TLDR: Michigan Wolverines, under the direction of new head coach Sherrone Moore, began their season on a high note with a 30-10 win over Fresno State. Moore, who is stepping into the role after Jim Harbaugh, exhibited remarkable enthusiasm throughout the game, rallying fans and players alike at The Big House. Despite initial struggles on the offense, Michigan’s strong second half performance, highlighted by touchdowns from Davis Warren and Alex Orji, along with Will Johnson’s significant interception, sealed the victory. Defying stiff competition from Fresno State, the Wolverines’ revamped offensive line and new quarterback lineup took time to gain momentum. Key players like Colston Loveland and Kalel Mullings made notable contributions, marking a solid start to the season. The game showcased Michigan’s resilience and potential under Moore’s leadership while Fresno State, under interim coach Tim Skipper, impressed by keeping pace for much of the match. Skipper, though unsuccessful, showed promise against a top-tier team. Expectations remain high for Michigan as they prepare to face Texas next week, aiming to climb higher in the AP poll rankings despite this opening performance.
Oh my goodness, what an adventure it was at the Big House as Sherrone Moore took over the reins and guided our beloved Wolverines to a home victory over Fresno State, 30-10. Now I’ll admit, the offense started a tad out of sorts, but Moore, with all his boundless passion, sure knew how to rally the team and the fans alike. I mean, who wouldn’t be pumped by fist-pumping and yelling in that end zone!
In some fits and starts, Moore’s squad - with a freshly shuffled offensive line and quarterbacks - took some time to find their rhythm. Davis Warren and Alex Orji managed their way through and threw a touchdown pass each. And how could we forget Will Johnson? Cherries on top folks, with his interception leading to a thrilling touchdown. Our boys in blue eventually transformed the game from a nail-biter into a comfortable win.
Fresno State didn’t come to mess around either. By golly, they played close until well into the fourth quarter. Coach Tim Skipper’s team gave us a bit of a run for our money, being just a four-point breath away near the second quarter’s end and 16-10 right in the fourth. But you know how they say, champions rise when it counts. And rise, we did.
Davis Warren stood tall - literally and metaphorically - navigating the field like a pro, even when the going got tough. His path to success makes it all the more impressive, considering his past battles with leukemia. Warren, alongside our trusty Colston Loveland and Kalel Mullings, provided enough sizzle to edge out their opponents and keep the score in our favor.
As for dear Fresno State, interim Coach Skipper really held his ground against a top-ranked team. It’s onwards and upwards for him I’d say, though amidst that trouncing at the end, he couldn’t quite eke out a win for the Bulldogs. They showed grit and determination, mind you, but we Wolverines had something to prove as defending champs, even if it meant we had to wait until the final quarter to show it.
Our new quarterbacks and realigned offensive line could use more polishing, mind you, but let’s just say we’re rearing to roar. With our heads held high, we’re ready to welcome No. 4 Texas this coming weekend. A bit of ironing out is needed for smoother plays, of course, as we hope to scoot further up the ranking with upcoming performances.
All in all, it was a fine spectacle and a show of spirit at the Big House, as our Wolverines marched on to a 1-0 start. I say let the games continue and let’s see how we fare in the weeks to come. Mo-town, you’ve got your coach in Moore and, boy, was he just the showstopper we wanted to usher in our new era.
