Recap: USC's Heartbreaking Collapse at Maryland

10/19/2024

Maryland 29, USC 28

TLDR: In a thrilling yet disheartening clash for USC, the Trojans faced another painful defeat against Maryland, extending their losing streak to three games. USC led 28-14 in the second half, only to succumb to a series of late-game blunders that let the Terrapins clinch a 29-28 victory. Miller Moss’s interception and the defense’s fourth-quarter lapses contributed to USC’s downfall. A blocked field goal by Maryland and a decisive penalty on John Humphrey led to Billy Edwards Jr.’s game-winning touchdown. Despite the setback, USC remains determined to fight through adversity as they prepare to host Rutgers, while Maryland looks ahead with newfound confidence as they aim for bowl eligibility.

Oh my gosh, you guys! I can’t believe how this game unfolded. USC’s Trojans hit the road to face Maryland, and what a rollercoaster it turned out to be. The Trojans had a 28-14 lead that looked pretty secure before things started to unravel in a frustrating fashion. Despite some promising moments, they just couldn’t seal the deal, resulting in a heartbreaking 29-28 loss. It’s a tough pill to swallow for any football fan who bleeds cardinal and gold.

Throughout most of the game, USC was driving with gusto and had the momentum on their side. But, oh dear, Miller Moss threw a critical interception in the third quarter that shifted the dynamics. It’s like they were losing their grip under pressure, and that interception was one door left open too many. The defense gave way for Maryland to score two decisive touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including one electrifying drive following a disastrous blocked field goal.

You could just feel the tension in the air after Michael Lantz’s blocked field goal attempt. Maryland’s Donnell Brown was right there to make that play, and it was all downhill for the Trojans after that. A crucial pass interference penalty called on John Humphrey paved the way for Maryland’s glory. Billy Edwards Jr. seized that opportunity, dashing for a go-ahead touchdown that left USC reeling with just under a minute to spare.

Coach Lincoln Riley shared his frustrations, noting how close these games have been. It’s really biting to lose games they’re leading, frustratingly so. As he put it, “That’s the tale of the last several weeks for us.” He’s hoping to inspire a turnaround and help this team finish stronger when it counts, especially at the end of matches.

On the other side, I must say Maryland must be feeling pretty pumped, right? Their coach, Mike Locksley, even joked about how unlikely a win seemed after the prior Northwestern loss. But Billy Edwards Jr. showed incredible leadership, throwing for a personal best of 373 yards. That kind of spirit is something to admire and it seems like Maryland is finding their groove, especially after Roman Hemby’s clutch TD run.

As USC prepares to host Rutgers and try to snap this losing streak, Maryland is setting their sights toward possible bowl eligibility. With momentum like this, anything’s possible for the Terrapins, even facing the challenging path ahead. Meanwhile, the Trojans have some soul-searching to do down in sunny SoCal. Stay hopeful, Trojans fans, another shot at victory is just around the corner.
