Huskies Fall to Wolverines in CFP Final

TLDR: Washington’s impressive 2023 season came to an end with a 34-13 defeat against Michigan in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. managed 255 passing yards, ending the season with a 14-1 record. Despite early struggles, Washington held strong, trailing only 17-10 at halftime. However, Michigan’s defensive prowess and effective rushing plays ultimately led to their victory. The Huskies’ finale was also marked as their last game representing the Pac-12 conference, concluding an era marked by a record-setting 14 wins and a noteworthy 25-3 transformation under coach Kalen DeBoer since 2022.

Washington’s 2023 football season drew to a close with a 34-13 loss to Michigan in the College Football Playoff National Championship. The Huskies, led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., saw their remarkable 21-game winning streak end on Monday night. Penix completed 27 out of 51 attempts, amassing 255 yards with one touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory over the top-ranked Wolverines. This game marked a notable end for Washington’s season, concluding their 14-1 record run under coach Kalen DeBoer, who took the reins in 2022.

The Huskies faced a formidable Michigan team that established an early lead with two long touchdown runs by Donovan Edwards, contributing to the Wolverines’ total of 229 rushing yards in the first quarter alone. The early deficit of 17-3 could have been discouraging, but Washington’s resilience shone through as they prevented any further scoring by Michigan in the remainder of the first half. A crucial fourth-and-goal conversion by Penix to Jalen McMillan in the dying seconds of the half brought the Huskies within a single touchdown, going into halftime down 17-10.

Despite the promising momentum, the second half started with a turnover when Michigan’s Will Johnson intercepted Penix, which ultimately led to a field goal, extending Michigan’s lead. Nevertheless, Washington persisted with a drive into Michigan territory, concluding with a 45-yard field goal by Grady Gross, keeping the Huskies in contention. However, this score remained Washington’s final points of the match, reflecting Michigan’s defensive strength.

Washington’s collective efforts throughout the season led to setting new program records, including a historic 14 victories. They matched their prior achievement of seven consecutive home wins, emphasizing their competitive prowess on familiar ground. Coach Kalen DeBoer’s leadership transformed a team that experienced a challenging 4-8 season two years ago into a formidable contender with an outstanding 25-3 record since his appointment.

The game also marked Washington’s last performance as a member of the Pac-12, closing a chapter filled with significant achievements and experiences. As the Huskies look towards the future, their 2023 journey will be remembered for its remarkable transformation and contribution to college football’s vibrant history.
