Huskies Lose Top Ploog to Oregon Ducks

TLDR: In a significant recruitment update for college football fans, Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies experienced a loss on Sunday afternoon. They saw highly-touted tight end, Vander Ploog, commit to the Oregon Ducks. This move was foreshadowed by several predictions following Ploog’s visit to Eugene, but it still dealt a significant blow to Washington’s recruiting aspirations. Ploog, recognized as the No. 16 tight end in the country for the Class of 2025 according to 247Sports, cited his professional ambitions and excitement about Oregon’s program trajectory as key factors in his decision. Despite the robust relationships he had forged with the Husky staff, including tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, the 6-foot-6 athlete from Troy High School in California ultimately chose to pursue his dreams in Eugene. As a result, Washington has fallen to the No. 19 spot in national recruiting standings, while looking to solidify its roster ahead of the early signing day in December.

The Washington Huskies faced a challenging shift in their recruiting landscape as four-star tight end Vander Ploog declared his switch to the Oregon Ducks. Ploog’s decision, although not entirely surprising given the predictions following his official visit to Eugene, came as an unwelcome development for head coach Jedd Fisch and tight ends coach Jordan Paopao. Standing tall at 6-foot-6 and weighing 223 pounds, Ploog is recognized as the nation’s 16th-ranked tight end for the 2025 class. His departure leaves a void in a position of need for the Huskies, who had high hopes following his summer commitment.

Vander Ploog had visited Washington’s Montlake campus three times informally after initially committing to the Huskies in June. Despite the familiarity and connections made, Ploog ultimately decided that his professional ambitions aligned better with the trajectory of the Oregon program. In a statement to 247Sports, Ploog expressed his difficulty in making the decision, acknowledging the impressive relationships he formed with the Washington coaching staff. However, the allure of potentially reaching the professional level with Oregon and the vision presented by Coach Dan Lanning proved too enticing for Ploog to overlook.

As they come to terms with this recruit’s departure, the Washington Huskies find themselves slipping to the 19th position in the 247Sports national recruiting rankings. This recent development adds pressure on Jedd Fisch’s coaching team to make strategic moves before the early signing period in December. The Huskies might need to focus on turning potential commitments in their favor to counterbalance Ploog’s loss and bolster their future roster, as the early signing period approaches with heightened anticipation and strategic planning.
