Recap: Narrow Victory Edges Rutgers Over UW

Rutgers 21, Washington 18

TLDR: In a heart-pounding Big Ten game, Rutgers narrowly emerged victorious against Washington with a final score of 21-18. Rutgers’ Kyle Monangai’s exceptional performance, accumulating 132 rushing yards and a touchdown, played a pivotal role. Washington’s last-minute rally fell short after a missed 55-yard field goal by Grady Gross. Despite Washington’s advantage in total yards with 521 compared to Rutgers’ 299, penalties and missed field goals plagued their efforts. Will Rogers III threw two touchdowns and accumulated 306 passing yards. Rutgers’ strategic plays, including touchdown runs by Monangai and Samuel Brown V, and key defensive stops were crucial. The Scarlet Knights now stand at 4-0, savoring their first undefeated start since 2012.

On a breezy Friday evening, Rutgers etched a narrow victory over Washington in a nail-biting Big Ten clash that left fans at the edge of their seats. Kyle Monangai was the star of the game, storming through Washington’s defense for 132 yards with an inspirational touchdown. Despite Washington’s Will Rogers III orchestrating a dramatic last-minute touchdown drive, it wasn’t quite enough to seal the deal for the Huskies.

The Scarlet Knights seized their Big Ten opener triumph, marking the start of their first 4-0 season since 2012. Meanwhile, Washington was handed a setback in its debut Big Ten road game. Grady Gross had the weight of the game on his shoulders with his 55-yard field goal attempt, but the winds worked in Rutgers’ favor, pushing the ball wide left just as the clock hit zero.

“We’re learning one day at a time,” commented Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano, as he showcased pride in his team’s defensive tenacity. Washington put up a formidable front, amassing 521 offensive yards to Rutgers’ 299, yet penalties and those few missed field goals held them back. Despite their proficiency, Husky players left the field acknowledging those critical errors.

Will Rogers III led Washington with determination, completing 26 of 36 passes for 306 yards and displaying impressive accuracy. Though he found his rhythm connecting with receivers Denzel Boston and Keleki Latu, the Scarlet Knights managed to hold their own through firm defensive stands. The score narrowed marginally, but Rutgers maintained their grip.

Rutgers commanded a notable lead thanks to strategic plays, such as Samuel Brown V’s electrifying 37-yard touchdown sprint. Monangai’s unyielding one-yard dash into the end zone set the stage for the Scarlet Knights’ early lead, while Athan Kaliakmanis extended their edge with a decisive strike to Ian Strong before halftime.

First-year Washington head coach Jedd Fisch reflected on critical moments that thwarted their campaign, as penalties and missed opportunities stacked up. The unfortunate call during a special teams misstep epitomized a challenging night for the team. However, Fisch aptly acknowledged Rutgers’ prowess and Wisconsin’s efforts, shaping a strong foundation for upcoming battles.

As Rutgers revels in their victory, they prepare to face Nebraska next, while Washington gears up to host the reigning champs, Michigan. With their resilience and strong spirit, both teams are expected to learn from this electrifying encounter and come back even mightier.
