TLDR: Jadyn Davis, the up-and-coming Michigan Wolverines quarterback, is making waves early on in his collegiate career. Although his five-star ranking has slipped since his commitment in March 2023, Davis isn’t letting that dampen his spirit. As an early enrollee, he’s already training with the team in L.A. as they gear up for the Rose Bowl. The young QB’s skillful throws and confident demeanor have caught the attention of seasoned players like Mike Barrett and Junior Colson. Both linebackers noted Davis’s grasp of the offense and his poised presence on the field. While Davis won’t play in the upcoming Rose Bowl, and with uncertainty around current starter J.J. McCarthy’s future decisions, Davis may very well be the Wolverines’ next leading man on the gridiron.
As a devout Michigan fan and sports enthusiast, let me tell ya, if there’s a buzz in the air about Michigan football, you can bet it’s swirling around Jadyn Davis. Sure, the clamor of his commitment might’ve cooled since the winter, but trust me when I say this: Davis ain’t just kicking back and basking in any past glory. Oh no, this kid is strapping on that winged helmet and getting down to business.
This young man, once touted as a five-star recruit when he committed to the blue and maize, has seen his star lose a little twinkle in the eyes of the rankings, but don’t think for a second that’s got him spooked. Nope, not one bit. Eight eager early enrollees, including Davis, took their talents to Los Angeles, blending with the team and turning heads, mine included, as they prep for a showdown with Alabama in the Rose Bowl come New Year’s Day.
During the team’s practice sessions for the College Football Playoff semifinal, it was Davis who stood out as something special, particularly in the eyes of some of Michigan’s most battle-tested. Six-year linebacker Mike Barrett–now there’s a guy who’s seen a few things–singled out Davis for his poise and prowess during a Rose Bowl podium session. And just after one practice in sunny California, Barrett notes Davis’s confidence and potent accuracy, even when he’s taking his first crack at a complex playbook.
But it wasn’t just Barrett, oh no. Davis caught Junior Colson’s attention too. The junior linebacker’s praise is particularly compelling given how he highlighted Davis’s swift acclimation to Michigan’s no-joke offense. The way he’s slotted the ball just so into his receivers’ hands speaks volumes of the young QB’s sharp learning curve.
Now bear in mind, Davis is holdin’ a clipboard for the Rose Bowl—not takin’ snaps. And with all eyes on J.J. McCarthy to see if he’s staying put for another year, the Wolverines’ QB depth chart hangs in the balance. But between you and me, if McCarthy decides to mosey on out, it just seems like Davis might already be in line to step into those big shoes come next season.
