Michigan Sets 2024 NFL Draft Record

TLDR: The 2024 NFL Draft concluded with a record-breaking performance for the Michigan Wolverines, who had 13 players selected over the weekend in Detroit. This impressive showing set a new program record for the number of draft picks, surpassing their previous high of 11 from 2017. Among the notable selections was quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who was chosen in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings after they traded up to secure the tenth spot. Other second-day picks included Kris Jenkins and Mike Sainristil, who were selected back-to-back by the Bengals and Commanders, respectively. Jim Harbaugh, coaching the Los Angeles Chargers, picked two Wolverines, including Junior Colson, to bolster his roster. Day 3 saw six more players, highlighting Michigan’s depth and talent. Despite falling short of Georgia’s record, this draft was a significant milestone for Michigan, affirming their prowess on the national stage. Players to watch as undrafted free agents include Karsen Barnhart and Braiden McGregor, indicating the enriching pipeline from Michigan continues to thrive in college football.

The 2024 NFL Draft has concluded, and it was a memorable event for the Michigan Wolverines in Detroit. The team sent 13 players to the professional ranks, establishing a new program milestone for the number of players selected in a single draft. Although not quite reaching Georgia’s record of 15, Michigan certainly made their mark over the draft weekend.

In total, 18 Michigan players were in the running this year, including their star starting quarterback, J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy was the standout as Michigan’s only first-round pick, moving to the Minnesota Vikings at the tenth spot after a trade with the Jets. His selection marked a crowning achievement amidst Michigan’s strong showing in the draft.

The second day of the draft continued to shine a light on the Wolverines, with Kris Jenkins and Mike Sainristil being picked consecutively by the Bengals and Commanders. Not to be outdone, Blake Corum, Roman Wilson, and Zak Zinter also impressively went in succession to the Rams, Steelers, and Browns. Among these was a notable pick by Jim Harbaugh for the Chargers, securing Junior Colson.

The concluding day of the draft saw an additional six Michigan players hearing their names called, again attesting to the depth and versatility of the team. After the intense weekend, several players remained notable for potential signing as undrafted free agents, keeping the Michigan presence active.

Undrafted, Karsen Barnhart, Trente Jones, and Drake Nugent remain promising options on the offensive side, while Braiden McGregor and Josh Wallace stand out on defense. These players offer continued prospects for Michigan’s contribution to professional football, even beyond the draft.

Michigan broke its previous draft record of 11 selections set in 2017, showcasing the strength and development of this collegiate football powerhouse. Each player selected represents years of effort and dedication, now carrying forward the Michigan legacy into the NFL.

The Wolverines have consistently been formidable contenders both on and off the field, and this latest draft performance reinforces Michigan’s role as a key player in college football. Fans and alumni alike can celebrate this prolific draft class, looking forward to the newly graduated players’ future successes in the league.
