Michigan Stadium to Serve Alcohol in 2024

TLDR: Starting in 2024, the University of Michigan will introduce alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium, following positive outcomes from similar implementations at Yost Ice Arena and Crisler Center. This decision comes after careful planning and evaluation involving multiple university departments to ensure safety and compliance with state laws. The Michigan Board of Regents approved the initiative after achieving success with alcohol sales and maintaining excellent conduct at Yost and Crisler. This plan has been developed with attention to compliance, including procedures aligning with state law, mandatory ID checks, and limits on beverages per purchase. The revenue from this new venture will support the university’s operational expenses and contribute to funding research projects, with a focus on maintaining a positive and secure environment for fans.

In a landmark move, the University of Michigan has announced that alcohol will be available for purchase at Michigan Stadium starting with the 2024 football season. This decision follows successful implementation of alcohol sales at Yost Ice Arena and Crisler Center earlier this year. After a thorough evaluation of these venues’ experiences, Michigan’s Board of Regents gave the go-ahead for a Class C liquor license at the iconic Big House. Fans attending the season’s opening game against Fresno State on August 31st will be able to enjoy this new service.

The October 2023 meeting of the Board of Regents marked initial approval for seeking liquor licenses for U-M’s athletic facilities. With the approval came the decision to first focus on Yost and Crisler, both of which began serving alcohol in February 2024. This phased approach allowed the university to gather data on fan behavior and safety, resulting in a detailed review ahead of rolling out similar measures at Michigan Stadium. Notably, both venues reported no significant issues related to intoxicated behavior during events since the change.

The process included collaboration with key departments to ensure the safe and responsible expansion of alcohol availability. Participants included the Office of Student Life, Division of Public Safety and Security, Risk Management, and Government Relations. To comply with Michigan’s strict regulations, procedures were established requiring ID checks for each purchase and a limit of two alcoholic beverages per transaction for individuals of legal drinking age. These measures aim to create a secure and enjoyable environment for all attendees.

Revenue generated from the alcohol sales will not only cover operational costs but will also partly fund university research projects. Ensuring responsible consumption is a priority, with ongoing efforts to promote safety and awareness among fans through targeted messaging. As the university gears up for the 2024 season, it is optimistic about integrating this new feature seamlessly into the game day experience, which remains central to the spirit of Michigan Wolverines football.
